Freedom. Connection. Calm.

A decompression walk is more than just a stroll — it’s an opportunity for dogs and their humans to slow down, reconnect, and reduce stress while exploring nature together.

Why choose a decompression walk?

In our busy lives, dogs are often rushed through short, structured walks. A decompression walk flips that script. It gives your dog the time and space to move at their own pace, follow their nose, and engage with the environment in a natural, fulfilling way. This kind of exploration lowers stress, promotes calm behaviour, and helps dogs feel more balanced.

Who benefits?

  • High-energy dogs who need an outlet beyond the backyard.
  • Anxious or sensitive dogs who benefit from quiet exploration in a safe space.
  • Reactive or easily over-aroused dogs who need structure and guidance without direct interaction with other dogs.
  • Senior dogs who enjoy moving at a slower pace with no social pressure.
  • Everyday family dogs who simply deserve enrichment, bonding, and stress relief.

How do owners benefit?

  • Learn to observe and understand your dog’s signals.
  • Practice being present and mindful, reducing stress for you, too.
  • Build a deeper bond by following your dog’s lead and experiencing the world through their senses.
  • Gain real-time feedback from behaviour specialists to strengthen your connection and confidence.

How it works

  • Walks are held on a 100-acre private property just outside Richmond in Ottawa’s West End.
  • Each dog wears a back-clip harness and is attached to a 12-30 foot long line (length will depend on the dog’s comfort radius).
  • Dogs walk individually with their handler, at a comfortable distance from others — no direct dog-to-dog interaction.
  • A specialized trainer or behaviour consultant guides the group, offering insights and support along the way.
  • Sessions are designed to be calm, mindful, and dog-led — this is their time to explore while you connect and learn.

This is more than exercise — it’s a chance to reset, breathe, and grow together.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long is a decompression walk?

Each guided session is approximately 60 minutes, allowing plenty of time for your dog to explore at their own pace without being rushed.

Do I need special equipment?

Yes. All dogs must wear a back-clip harness and be attached to a 12+ foot long line. This ensures both safety and comfort. If you don’t already have the right gear, we’re happy to provide recommendations.

Can reactive dogs participate?

Absolutely. These walks are designed with structure and safety in mind. Dogs remain on long lines and at comfortable distances from one another, with no direct dog-to-dog interactions. This makes them an excellent option for dogs who may be reactive or easily overwhelmed.

What if my dog is shy, anxious, or older?

Decompression walks are particularly beneficial for sensitive, shy, or senior dogs. They provide a calm environment where dogs can move at their own pace, explore without pressure, and build confidence in a safe, supportive setting.

How do humans benefit from this activity?

Owners often find the experience just as valuable as their dogs do. The walks encourage you to slow down, be mindful, and connect deeply with your dog. Many people describe them as restorative, stress-relieving, and a refreshing way to reset together.

Will a trainer be with us the whole time?

Yes. Trainers will be on site for the entire session. You’ll have multiple interactions with them as they move through the group, offering guidance, feedback, and support. A system will also be in place to ensure you can easily request trainer attention or intervention at any point if needed.

Where do the walks take place?

All walks are held on a 100-acre private property just outside Richmond in Ottawa’s West End. The space provides plenty of natural enrichment and open areas for safe exploration.
